<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>Little research has been reported regarding the effects of using different devices and immersion depths during the performance of resistance exercises in a water environment. The purpose of this study was to compare muscular activation of upper extremity and core muscles during shoulder extensions performed at maximum velocity with different devices and at different depths. Volunteers (N=24) young fit male university students performed 3 repetitions of shoulder extensions at maximum velocity using 4 different devices and at 2 different depths. Maximum amplitude of the electromyographic root mean square of the latissimus dorsi (LD), rectus abdominis (RA) and erector lumbar spinae (ES) was recorded. Electromyographic signals were normalized to the maximum voluntary isometric contraction. No significant differences were found in the neuromuscular responses between the different devices used during the performance of shoulder extension at xiphoid process depth. Regarding comparisons of muscle activity between the two depths analyzed in the present study, only the LD showed significantly (p≤0.05) higher activity at xiphoid process depth compared to clavicle depth. Therefore, if maximum muscle activation of the extremities is required, the xiphoid depth is a better choice than clavicle depth, and the kind of device is not relevant. Regarding core muscles, neither the kind of device nor the immersion depth modify muscle activation.</b></span></div>

Plyometric and resistance trainings, performed during a relatively short period of time (~15-30 days), have been successfully used to improve RE in trained athletes. However, these <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> types, particularly when they are unaccustomed activities for the individuals, may cause delayed onset muscle soreness, swelling, and reduced muscle strength. Some studies have demonstrated that <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>-induced muscle damage has a negative impact on endurance running performance. Specifically, the muscular damage induced by an acute bout of downhill running has been shown to reduce RE during subsequent moderate and high-intensity <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> (>65% VO(2)max). However, strength <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>(i.e., jumps, isoinertial and isokinetic eccentric exercises) seems to impair RE only for subsequent high-intensity <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>(~90% VO(2)max). Finally, a single session of resistance <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> or downhill running (i.e., repeated bout effect) attenuates changes in indirect markers of muscle damage and blunts changes in RE.</b></span></div>

Arm-operated <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">bicycles</span> are frequently used to facilitate upper extremity training however effective use of these devices at patient homes is hampered by lack of remote connectivity with clinical rehabilitation team, inability to monitor <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> progress in real time using simple graphical representation, and absence of an alert system which would prevent exertion levels exceeding those approved by the clinical rehabilitation team. We developed an interactive biking <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> (iBikE) platform aimed at addressing these limitations. The platform uses a miniature wireless 3-axis accelerometer mounted on a patient wrist that transmits the cycling acceleration data to a laptop. The laptop screen presents an <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> dashboard to the patient in real time allowing easy graphical visualization of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> progress and presentation of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> parameters in relation to prescribed targets. The iBikE platform is programmed to alert the patient when <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> intensity exceeds the levels recommended by the patient care provider. The iBikE platform has been tested in 7 healthy volunteers (age range: 26-50 years) and shown to reliably reflect <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> progress and to generate alerts at pre-setup levels. Five male subjects participated in the experiment, and the oxygen uptake was measured during cycling <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> using this new pedaling rate control system of electrical motor assistance, which could maintain the pedaling rate within a specific range, similar to that in previous type of electrically assisted <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">bicycles</span>. Results showed that this new pedaling rate control system at 65 rpm ensured continuous aerobic <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> intensity around the AT in two subjects, and this intensity level was higher than that observed in previous type. However, certain subjects were unable to maintain the expected <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> intensity because of their particular cycling preferences such as the pedaling rate. It is necessary to adjust the specific pedaling rate range of the electrical motor assist control according to the preferred pedaling rate, so that this system becomes applicable to anyone who want continuous aerobic <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>.</b></span></div>

It presents a broad, congruent and discerning narrative literature review with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of the condition '<span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> addiction', including symptoms and options for treatment. In addition, guidelines are provided with respect to 'healthy' levels of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>. Criteria used for determining the eligibility of studies evaluated in the review included the provision of relevant information in studies identified using pertinent search terms. The review highlights some of the key distinctions between healthy levels of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> and <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> addiction. The findings suggest that an individual who is addicted to <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> will continue exercising regardless of physical injury, personal inconvenience or disruption to other areas of life including marital strain, interference with work and lack of time for other activities. 'Addicted' exercisers are more likely to <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> for intrinsic rewards and experience disturbing deprivation sensations when unable to <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>. In contrast, 'committed' exercisers engage in physical activity for extrinsic rewards and do not suffer severe withdrawal symptoms when they cannot <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>. Exercisers must acquire a sense of life-balance while embracing an attitude conducive to sustainable long-term physical, psychological and social health outcomes. Implementation of recommendations by the Canadian Society for <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font-size: 15.600000381469727px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Exercise</span> Physiology, which states that all apparently healthy adults between 18 and 64 years of age should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate (5 or 6 on a scale of 0-10) to vigorous (7 or 8 on a scale of 0-10) intensity aerobic physical activity per week in bouts of 10 minutes or more, also expressed as 30 minutes per day distributed over 5 days per week, would be a good start.</span></h2>

RCTs were typically small and of short duration, and enrolled adult subjects with severe primary RLS of long duration. Placebo-controlled RCTs (18 trials) demonstrated that dopamine agonists (pramipexole, rotigotine, ropinirole, and cabergoline) increased the percentage of subjects who had a clinically important response defined as ≥50 percent reduction from baseline in mean International RLS symptom scale scores (IRLS responders) (risk ratio [RR]=1.60; [95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.38 to 1.86], k=7), improved RLS symptom scores, patient-reported sleep scale scores (effect size=0.38; [95% CI: 0.29 to 0.46], k=8), and disease-specific quality of life (effect size=−0.37; [95% CI: −0.48 to −0.27], k=9). Dopamine agonists resulted in more patients who experienced at least one adverse event (high-strength evidence for all outcomes). Long-term augmentation (drug-induced worsening of symptoms) and treatment withdrawal were common. Alpha-2-delta ligands (gabapentin enacarbil, gabapentin, and pregabalin) increased the number of IRLS responders (RR=1.66; [95% CI: 1.33 to 2.09], k=3, high strength of evidence) and mean change in IRLS symptom scores (k=3, high strength of evidence). Intravenous ferric carboxymaltose reduced IRLS symptom scale scores versus placebo (k=1, moderate strength of evidence). Four studies assessed nonpharmacologic interventions. Compression stockings but not the botanical extract valerian improved IRLS symptom scale scores more than sham or placebo treatments. Strength of evidence was moderate for compression stockings and low for valerian. <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Exercise</span> improved symptoms more than control (low-strength evidence). Near-infrared light treatment improved IRLS symptom scores more than sham (low-strength evidence). Two trials compared active treatments. In one small crossover trial, pramipexole and levodopa/benserazide resulted in similar improvements in IRLS scores (low-strength evidence). Cabergoline improved IRLS scores and resulted in less augmentation than levodopa (moderate-strength evidence). Iron improved symptoms in adults with iron deficiency (k=2) (low-strength evidence). No studies enrolled pregnant women, children, or those with end-stage renal disease. Withdrawal from mostly dopamine agonist and levodopa treatment at 1 year or more ranged from 13 to 57 percent. Treatment withdrawals were due to lack of efficacy (6% to 37%) as well as augmentation and other adverse events.</b></span></div>

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b><span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Exercise</span> is considered to be a key aspect of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">lymphoedema</span> treatment, although there is little evidence for the therapeutic effect of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> in managing breast cancer-related <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">lymphoedema</span> (BCRL). This small randomised controlled trial (RCT) was designed to determine the feasibility, prior to undertaking a larger RCT, of researching a daily home-based <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>programme to treat stable BCRL. An experimental design compared the <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> intervention combined with standard <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">lymphoedema</span> self-care to self-care alone over a 6-month period. Twenty-three women with stable unilateral BCRL of ≥10 % excess limb volume (ELV) were randomly allocated to a daily home-based <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> programme and self-care (n = 11) or self-care measures alone (n = 12). The primary objective was to determine difference in limb volume reduction for the two groups. Secondary objectives were to monitor change in other areas that impact BCRL: quality of life, arm function and range of shoulder movement. All 23 women completed the trial, providing full data for each time point. The intervention group showed a clinically and statistically significant improvement in relative ELV at week 26 (95 % confidence interval (CI) -26.57 to -5.12), whereas the control group improvement crossed the line of no effect (95 %CI -17.71 to 1.1). This study demonstrated the feasibility of conducting a RCT of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> as a therapeutic intervention in the management of BCRL. Although the sample was small, the results support the findings of other <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> studies which have shown trends towards improvement.</b></span></div>

Based on the status of the 3 <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> fulfillment groups, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), which was adjusted for age, sex, and physical activity levels, was performed to compare the results of the outcome measures among the 3 groups. The intervention group (n = 88, aged 70.3 +/- 6.2 years) was divided into 2 subgroups: the deterioration subgroup (participants with low-<span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> fulfillment after the intervention) and the improvement subgroup (participants with high-<span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> fulfillment after the intervention). Subsequently, the intervention effects were assessed by repeated measurements of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) between the 2 subgroups.</b></span></div>

Similar results were obtained for each group with respect to the physical activity levels. The repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that time had an important effect on lower physical functions and the SF-8 subscale (1 item) score; it also revealed the important effects of body mass index, the WHO-5 score, the SF-8 subscale (6 items) score, and psychological independence on the group.</b></span></div>

These findings provide preliminary evidence, which indicates that <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> can provide sufficient fulfillment and contribute to the promotion and improvement of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">health</span> in older adults. Moreover, performing adequate tests on <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> fulfillment may aid in assessing the effects of intervention programs in regional healthcare systems.</b></span></div>

The combination of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> therapy with the warm water may be an appropriate treatment. However, studies focusing on the analysis of immediate pain during and after an <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> session are rare. This study aimed to determine the immediate changes of a warm water pool-based<span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> program (12 weeks) on pain (before vs. after session) in female fibromyalgia patients. 33 Spanish women with fibromyalgia were selected to participate in a 12 weeks (2 sessions/week) low-moderate intensity warm water pool-based program. We assessed pain by means of a Visual Analogue Scale before and after each single session (i. e., 24 sessions). We observed immediate benefits on pain with a mean decrease ~15% in all sessions, except in the fourth one. There was an association of pain difference (pre-post) session with pain pre session (p=0.005; β=0.097±0.034) and with age (p<0.001; β=0.032±0.008). There were no significant accumulative differences on pain, pre session, post session, and pre-post changes (all p>0.05). Therefore this study showed that a warm water pool-based <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> program for 12 weeks (2 times/week) led to a positive immediate decrease in level of pain in female patients with fibromyalgia. Improvements were higher in older women and in those with more intense pain.</b></span></div>

Hippocrates declared over 25 centuries ago that "if we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health." There is now a wealth of evidence indicating that the benefits of physical activity extend across multiple organ systems and span the age spectrum.(1,2) Perhaps most compelling are data highlighting the potential of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>to prevent and attenuate chronic conditions related to insulin resistance and atherosclerosis.(3,4) Despite nationwide recommendations encouraging regular <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> for all adults, fewer than 1 in 3 Americans engage in routine physical activity.(5) Low adherence rates could relate in part to the fact that we still do not really understand how <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> works. For this reason, recommendations remain non-specific with respect to how frequent, how intense, how long, what type, and for whom <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> should be prescribed.(4).</b></span></div>

Obesity increases the risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and stroke, three of the top five causes of burden of disease and injury in Australia.2 Dietary modification is the mainstay of any weight loss program and has been shown to improve cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors including blood pressure, lipids, serum glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and insulin levels as well as reducing risk of acute coronary syndromes, stroke and all cause mortality. <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Exercise</span> has been shown to be an important additional strategy to a weight loss program. However, in Australia, nearly 40% of males and 60% of females carry out insufficient daily physical activity.</b></span></div>

High intensity interval training involves repeatedly exercising at a high intensity for 30 seconds to several minutes, separated by 1-5 minutes of recovery (either no or low intensity <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>). HIT is associated with increased patient compliance and improved cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes and is suitable for implementation in both healthy and 'at risk' populations. Importantly, as some types of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> are contraindicated in certain patient populations and HIIT is a complex concept for those unfamiliar to <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span>, some patients may require specific assessment or instruction before commencing a HIIT program.</b></span></div>

Molecular mechanisms for the influence of <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> in persons with cancer include altering tumor initiation pathways and affecting hormonal, inflammatory, immune, and insulin pathways. Physical activity has been found to play a role in the prevention of certain malignancies, including breast, colon, and other cancers. An increasing amount of evidence indicates that physical activity may affect prognostic outcomes in certain cancer diagnoses, especially breast cancer. Structured <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">exercise</span> and physical activity interventions can be helpful in addressing specific survivorship issues, including overall quality of life, cardio respiratory impairment, cancer-related fatigue, and <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">lymphedema</span>. <span class="highlight" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Exercise</span> also may be helpful during the palliative care phase to alleviate symptoms and increase physical well-being. The answer to that question really depends on the kind of activity. Tennis or golf for example does not rank very high on the list of beneficial activities for individuals with upper extremity lymphedema. For patients with lymphedema of the leg, kick-boxing and step-aerobics are activities that bear a great risk of injury and therefore should be avoided.</b></span></div>

Effective lymph flow depends on sufficient muscle and joint activity, especially if the functionality of the lymphatic system is compromised. Decongestive exercises are most effective if performed while the patient wears compression garments or bandages, which are also essential components in lymphedema management. Ideally, decongestive exercise protocols are performed two to three times daily for about 10-15 minutes, and the patient should rest with the affected limb elevated for at least 10 minutes following the exercises.</b></span></div>

The movement of the diaphragm, combined with the outward and inward movements of the abdomen, ribcage, and lower back, also promotes general well-being, peristalsis and return of venous blood back to the heart.</b></span></div>

There are many other types of exercise that have health benefits such as Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, <a href="http://www.lymphedemapeople.com/wiki/doku.php?id=aqua_therapy_for_postsurgical_breast_cancer_arm_lymphedema">aquatic exercise</a>,1 trampoline rebounding, <a href="http://www.lymphedemapeople.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=375">breathing exercises</a>,2 and relaxation exercise that have not been adequately studied in people with lymphedema. However, the person with lymphedema can use the benefits of </b><b>any system of exercise if he/she follows the general safety principles of exercise with lymphedema, seeks medical guidance, and uses caution in starting any new exercise program. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;"><b style="background-color: white;">Exercise and types of lymphedema: </b></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763; font-size: large;"><b style="background-color: white;">Lymphedema has many causes. The type of exercise that is best for an individual depends upon the severity and cause of lymphedema and other co-existing medical conditions (e.g. heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, etc). Exercise for breast cancer-related lymphedema is the most studied lymphedema condition. Many conclusions about exercise and lymphedema are based on studies of breast cancer survivors that may or may not apply to other forms of lymphedema. </b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;"><b>Lymphedema Remedial Exercise:</b></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #073763; font-size: large;"><b>Lymphedema Remedial Exercise is a part of treatment for lymphedema when reduction of size of a limb is necessary. Lymphedema Remedial Exercise involves active, repetitive, non-resistive motion of the involved body part. Exercise in Phase I and Phase II Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) (see Position Paper “Diagnosis and Treatment of Lymphedema” http://www.lymphnet.org/pdfDocs/nlntreatment.pdf) is performed with compression as </b><b>an essential part of the total (complete) reductive phase of lymphedema therapy.3-5 Lymphedema exercises, used with compression, help the body’s natural muscle pump to increase venous and lymphatic fluid return to the circulatory system and out of the swollen areas. </b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #073763;"><b style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></b></span>
<span style="color: #073763; font-size: large;"><b>Remedial Exercises for lymphedema are similar to some movements of low impact Tai Chi and Qigong, but are different in that lymphedema Remedial Exercise is used with Phase I treatment of lymphedema to reduce size of the body part. Lymphedema Remedial Exercise has been studied and shown to reduce limb swelling.3-5 It is unknown whether Lymphedema Remedial Exercise alone can prevent lymphedema in at-risk individuals, or whether they can maintain reduction of swelling without compression. </b></span></span><br />

<span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;"><b>Flexibility or Stretching Exercises: </b></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #073763; font-size: large;"><b>Flexibility exercises include a wide range of activities that stretch muscle and connective tissues to increase and/or preserve range of motion. Flexibility exercises can minimize skin scarring and joint contractures that may lessen lymph flow. Flexibility exercises should be performed slowly and progressed gradually. Flexibility exercises are not a treatment for lymphedema, but are a part of optimal lifestyle management for reducing the complications </b><b>of lymphedema. Lymphedema has a tendency to restrict motion of muscles and joints. Optimal lymphatic function requires full mobility of muscles and joints. Lymphedema from cancer treatment can be associated with tight muscles and connective tissues due to fibrous adhesions from surgery or radiation. Tight muscles and scars from surgery or radiation may require Physical or Occupational Therapy to treat before attempting to do self-stretching. </b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #073763;"><b style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></b></span>
<span style="color: #073763; font-size: large;"><b>Specific stretching exercises for cancer treatment-related scars and joint restrictions in an area at risk of lymphedema should be prescribed by a provider familiar with the management of lymphedema. A specialized form of stretching exercise may be required for Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS) or axillary cording, a condition that can occur in cancer survivors who have had axillary (armpit) lymph nodes removed.6 AWS may benefit from treatment by a certified lymphedema therapist and specific home stretches taught by a therapist.7</b></span></span><br />

At baseline and post-program, validated measures assessed patient-reported outcomes (PRO) and physiologic measurements.</span></b></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">RESULTS:</span><span style="color: #073763;"> Data were collected from 221 survivors from 13 YMCA sites and 36 separate classes. All participants had data available at one time point, while matched baseline and post-program PRO and physiologic data were available for 85% (N = 187). Participants with matched data were largely female (82%), with mean age of 58 (range, 28-91 years). Time since diagnosis ranged from 1 to 48 (mean, 5.6 years), and mean time since last treatment was 3.0 (range, 1-33 years). Physiological improvements were significant in systolic (P < 0.001) and diastolic (P = 0.035) blood pressure, upper and lower body strength, the 6-min walk test (P = 0.004), and flexibility (P < 0.001). Participants reported improvements in overall health-related quality of life (P < 0.001), social support (P = 0.019), body pain (P = 0.016), fatigue (P < 0.001), insomnia (P < 0.001), and overall musculoskeletal symptoms (P = <0.001). Few injuries or lymphedema events occurred during classes.</span></b></span></div>
